SLP NEST is a place for students to create and explore around themes and topics that interest them.
SLP NEST will provide opportunities for cultural competence, planning, decision-making, resistance skills, interpersonal competence, peaceful conflict resolution, personal power, self-esteem, sense of purpose and a positive view of a personal future. It will also be a space for personal growth and development — too rare in our over-scheduled, over-stressed and over-structured lives.
To provide a welcoming, teen-centric space that nurtures individual expression, encourages a diverse community and builds life skills.
SLP Nest began as a group of high school students motivated by the increasing amounts of stress and rising mental health issues among the teens of our community. They recognized there were a limited number of venues for teens to gather in St. Louis Park and no real space for teens to call their own. Inspired by similar projects established in surrounding communities, teen members of SLP Nest created awareness and engaged city leaders as well as residents about the benefits of locating and revitalizing a space for our high school aged youth. Within two years, a space was located, initial funding secured and a 501c3 non-profit was created. SLP Nest is a casual place, where food and drinks are available to everyone in the community with a concentration on teen-centered programs and events. Come hang out, study, exhibit, perform and be part of the community.
